Essay: Stage Fright

STAGE FRIGHT

Based on Wikipedia; stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety, fear, or persistent phobia which may be aroused in an individual by the requirement to perform in front of an audience, whether actually or potentially. In the context of public speaking, this may precede or accompany participation in any activity involving public self-presentation. In some cases stage fright may be a part of a larger pattern of social phobia or social anxiety disorder, but many people experience stage fright without any wider problems.

Quite often, stage fright arises in a mere anticipation of a performance, often a long time ahead. It has numerous manifestations: fluttering or pounding heart, tremor in the hands and legs, sweaty hands, diarrhoea, facial nerve tics, dry mouth, and erectile dysfunction.

As ordinary high school students, we face the same kind of problem almost every year. Especially now the government has decides to change the education system into a more practical system as we can observe from the Form 1 and Form 2 PBS system where they have to do a lot of presentations and public-speaking in front of classes or assemblies as a form of learning. This is to promote communication skills and values among teammates. From time to time we ought to feel this kind of feelings as our body response to the situations.

The effects of performance anxiety are varying on different person. Some will have sweating hands, some will have cold feet, and their body are shivering even though not cold, and there are some that immediately faint just thinking of standing in front of an audience. It may sound funny at first but wait until you are in his shoes. Although we seem this does matter much in our lives but it do effects our appearance, carrier and even our own future. In 5 or 10 years from now we are not in this school anymore. We maybe in some college or university, doing some last minute check-up for some assignments with our mates because the next day we need to present them in a lecture room with all other the classmates and professors are there to see and judge our presentation. The last assignment that will determine whether we pass or fail. Surely we will feel nervous. But we still need to do it perfectly or we will fail. In short, we cannot let the feelings win.

To conclude everything, it is okay to feel scare sometimes. It is what makes us humans but never use it as an excuse to avoid something that we have to face. Maybe it is cool to avoid but later on it will come to bite you. Be brave and keep moving forward. “Not everything that is faced can be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” – James Baldwin.

Essay: Hygiene Issues in Taman Desa Baru Community

HYGIENE ISSUES IN TAMAN DESA BARU COMMUNITY

Recently, many health issues appear in Taman Desa Baru community that border most of permanent residents. Many of them currently suffer from contagious diseases such as dengue fever and flu. The main cause of these health problems is the area is not properly taken to care as it used to be by the government and the residents itself as many of the former and responsible residents move away and some of the new residents seem to be lack of awareness of surroundings. As the responsible authorities, this troubled situation needs to be taken note.
Taman Desa Baru used to be the cleanest residue in Bukit Baru zone but as the time passes the area becomes worse because of the lack of cleanliness. Litters scattered everywhere and not a single action has been done to throw the rubbish properly. This dreadful scenario shows that there is lack of civic consciousness among the residents of the area. The dustbins in the area not regularly pick up as routine by the Southern Waste Company (SWC) who in-charge of picking up the trash to the dumping site. The lorry only come twice a month and not following the common routine of twice a week. This causes the trash to pill up and create a smell worse than the oldest blue cheese in the world. Not only the smell is unbearable but also to the plain sight is just too disgusting to look. Thus, inviting unwanted pests and creatures creep into the society.
Move on to the next concern, there are many restaurants around the area of Taman Desa Baru and the taste of the food is incredibly delicious and suits the theme of Malacca as The Food Paradise but sadly, a reality check needs to be done as the state of cleanliness and hygiene in most of the restaurants is in their worst state until it could reach the critical point where even potential customers have lost their appetites just by looking the restaurant for far away. It is very unclean, dirty and even worse than a typical teenage boy’s room. The owners seem less care about the state of their own restaurant. Proper disposal of used oil and wastage is not done accordingly to the protocols set by the government as they simply dispose everything into the drains. Eventually this creates another problem such drain clogged thus making the place fill with stinky smell, rats and the ugly-looking cockroaches.
Therefore, I wish to draw the attention of the local authorities to fix these scenes and make some changes to improve cleanliness in Taman Desa Baru again. I would like to suggest to the city council to hire more cleaners to clean the mess in this area. Not only the residents get the benefits but this also creates more jobs opportunities for the needy. Other than that it would not hurt just to add more rubbish bins around the area as the quantity of bins is not sufficient compared the population of Taman Desa Baru and make sure the SWC follows the pick-up routine as usual. My pleasure to remind the city council to keep an eye on the state of restaurants nearby and if possible help them to be a better restaurant in hygiene area or give them course on the right way to dispose oil and wastage. For the sake of the future generation, I would to request to the city council to develop a campaign for Taman Desa Baru residents to raise their awareness of their surroundings and promote activities such as plant more trees and flowering plants to recreate the spark of greenness in Taman Desa Baru.

Yours faithfully, 6th September 2012.

Essay: Manglish

Malay + English = Manglish…..??? Englay….???

What is Manglish??? Is it even a proper word? Nah ah! Even if you search in all dictionaries that exist in this world, you will never find it!  This is because it’s a slang that is used mainly by Malaysians especially teenagers. But the main question is how does this unofficial ‘language’ exist and how does it affect our people daily life?

“Once upon a time there was a British boy who moved to Malaysia and met three kids of different races about his age. The boy didn’t know how to speak Malay, Chinese nor Tamil. But on the contrary the Malaysian children knew how to speak British English. So they started to be friends and would always converse in English. One day the Brits boy fell in love with a local girl but the girl refused to accept him because he couldn’t converse in Malay, Chinese or Indian although she could easily converse in English. So the Brits boy asked his friends to help him to get his dream girl by teaching him some of Malaysian conversational words. His friends felt sympathized with him and agreed to help him out. After a few lessons, the boy was able to converse in Malay but not fluently. The British boy once again asked the girl to meet him. The boy began to converse as he had practice.

Suddenly, he began to feel nervous and started to forget everything that he had learnt. He didn’t know what to do as the girl waited patiently. So he began to speak whatever crossed his mind,

I love you-lah. Why language barrier kena become problem to us-meh? Why not we just put that aside and mula lagi sekali-lorh…. Saya really betul suka awak, amma.

The girl laughed and accepted his proposal. Years later they were married and had many children. However, her husband still used the mixed language or more known as ‘bahasa rojak’ and used it when he conversed with his close friends. Then like waves, it spread widely to local people especially the younger ones. Then the ‘language’ become sort of heritage and was passed down and used by younger generations until now. Fin.”

That is just a fun bedtime story not a real deal. Many aspects can be consider as the main causes on how Manglish exists such as confusion between languages, mother tongue dialects, text languages and other causes that I can’t explain as I am not a language expert. But I stress this again that Manglish is NOT a language.  Sure it is much more convenient to use Manglish but still it is not proper English.

Try to imagine if you coincidently meet a really good looking foreigner (Mat Salleh) who is lost and only knows English and suddenly that person asks you for directions to some place like the infamous Red Square, Stadthuys for example and you answer like this,

[Excuse me, are you lost-ker?? Oh!!  You want to go to Stadthuys. OK-OK, listen right-right. You go straight from here-tau, you see corner don’t turn where-where. Just go straight until you see three roads-tau and you turn right. If you wrong road don’t worry just gostan-lah. If you still lost, you stop side road and read the board sign road. OK?]

Do you really think that the ‘Mat Salleh’ will understand you? Think again and for sure that ‘Mat Salleh’ will get more lost thanks to you. It’s ok to use Manglish but it does not make us a better speaker especially in English. Maybe when we speak Manglish with Malaysian citizen, we will not face any misunderstanding as we can cope with it but it doesn’t mean that other people will understand it too. They will not understand us unless we speak proper English language.

Manglish causes us many unnecessary problems especially among students. Many students wonder why they can’t get A+ in English Language subject. This is because they make many errors in speaking and it is reflected in their test papers. If they learn to speak properly, they can tell the differences between right and wrong sentences. Surely everybody can score A+ in English and Malay too.

Proper English is the best way to avoid any misunderstanding with foreigners especially to native speakers. Information can be transmitted correctly by speaking properly and this will save us from getting ourselves or others into unwanted situation. We also gain respect from others as we speak properly and with confidence. We can be a better debater, politician, teacher and most importantly a better person.

So, I invite each and every one of you to speak proper English as it will help us in many ways especially in our studies and lifestyles. Proper English is the best. (Ganbate!Fighting!Terbaik!)

Essay: Lost in Translation

Lost….in Translation

“People keep repeating their mistake as they think it is correct.”

When words come out from your mouth, what do you expect? Do you want to see people inspired? Do you want to see the world change? If you want to see people reaction first, look at yourself. Please mind your own English if you want to inspire people with language.

What is wrong with our English? No basics in grammar. A direct translation from our native language amplifies our mistakes. Nowadays English is used widely in many fields because it is known as an international language. Do you agree if I said English is the king of the world? A king is an important figure in a monarchy. In a chess game, the king plays as an active role. Absolutely, it is important to learn English. I mean right English, not the one you called ‘bahasa rojak’. Since our national language or mother tongue is Malay, we tend to mix it with English.

As shown in the new educational show ‘Oh! My English’ better known to local as OME, we can see the differences between these two languages. Definitely it is impossible to translate for example ‘buah hati’ is the love of my life where as a literal translation would be ‘fruit heart’, which some would find it hilarious. Not all words in both languages have the same meaning and we should not take it as a joke every time. Learning grammar is part of parcel of the English language. ‘Oh! My English’ is loved by everyone. They find it hilarious as they can relate to it, in Malaysia ‘Manglish’ in the order of the day. So, boys and girls try not to repeat your errors.

People keep repeating their mistakes as they think it is right. However, do they even try to correct it? How can they do that, when they don’t even realize their own errors? It has become a fad, corrupted the English Language especially in this age of digital technology where a simple ‘you’ has now become the letter ‘u’.

[“Me, Lin and Raiha are going to the library”, says Farisha.]

Sounds familiar? The correct sentence is “Lin, Raiha and I are going to the library”.

Please take it seriously! Although English is not rated as the most learned language, Mandarin dominates the chart but English is widely used meaning it still rules the world. We should have at least a basic command of English, as a simple as greetings, ‘Good morning’ is not hard to say. To be fluent in the language, one should start from home. Parents can have a conversation with their children in simple English such as, ‘Thank you’.

After learning English you will realize it is an easy language compared to other languages. English is much easier and simpler. In Mandarin, you might be facing the difficulties in pronunciation of the word if you are a ‘newbie’. We are lucky because our tongue can accept English. But, still practice makes perfect. The words will smoothly come out from our mouth.

The first step in learning the language is to cure for the weakness in our language should be started by us. Stop pointing finger at your teachers, school, parents or even the government for your weaknesses. The learning process is different for each individual. Learning the English language slowly is not a mistake but we should see it as our necessity. In 2007, Milan was the first to observe the ‘International Day of Slowness’. Our day will be the longest day of the year. The aim is to celebrate the idea of stepping out of the fast lane by doing less and taking your time on it. So, be inspired and take your time polishing your language.
